Apache Burgers

Opened in 1969, Apache Burgers is considered an institution in Etobicoke. I dare you to find a seat during the lunch time rush. Heck, weekends at 1am can also be a challenge some nights.

Apache Burgers, located at 5236 Dundas Street West at Six Points Plaza, was introduced to me by a neighbour about 25 years ago and I still make the effort to grab a burger there about once a month. Ask anyone in Etobicoke, from teenagers to seniors, and they’ll know about Apache Burgers. I guess you can say that it spans generations. Sure there may be equally great hamburger joints across the city but Apache Burgers belongs to Etobicoke. Between your typical fast food franchise and the new gourmet burger places that seem to be popping up everywhere, Apache Burgers is in a class all by itself.

If you’ve never been, which is hard to believe, you should start with the basic hamburger and fries. However, if you’re up for a challenge order the massive Apache Burger. It’s two thick patties covered with cheese and your choice of toppings. Other recommended fare are the delicious poutine and huge onion rings (they look like donuts). But be careful with digging into the onion rings too quickly or you’ll burn your finger. The retro 50s decor, complete with neon guitar overhead and Marilyn Monroe portraits adorning the wall, goes a long way to contribute to the diner “feel”. Apache Burgers has had some famous visitors over the years including Tie Domi, Brendan Shanahan, and the Stanley Cup.

With huge sloppy burgers and fries piled high, gluttony has never tasted so good thanks to Apache Burgers in Etobicoke.

  1. Apache Burger is our first choice for a fast food experience in Etobicoke! They make authentic hamburgers, cheese burgers, french fries, onion rings and milkshakes.

Its fast, its simple with lots of parking.

This beats any of the big brand burger chains for sure!

  2. I grew up in Etobicoke throughout the 70’s and 80’s. As I remember it, Apache was the epitome of burger awesomeness. I found myself in Etobicoke again not long ago and brought a friend for lunch there. After raving on and on about how good this was going to be.. in the end I was embarrassed. The former thick fresh patties were frozen and thin. The buns dwarfed the burgers and were stale. The poutine was canned nastiness and not warm enough to melt the cheese. Apparently management changed at some point and whomever runs it now is merely hiding behind the Apache name and the goodwill created by the original owners. Scratch this place off your to-do-list.

    • Hi Kim,

I’ve heard the same sentiments from a couple of people while others feel that it’s still a great place to grab a burger. I’ll have to try it out again one of these days.

    • We agree. Someone had mentioned once that something had changed but we went by a couple days later to check it out. Nope. Great as it has always been!

  3. I do remember the late 70s and 80s going there, but when you reach your 50s its no fun anymore, you have to watch your cholestrol levels, and everything else that comes with getting old!

I may just go there now and treat myself to some fries

    lol
