Jane's Walk

Living in a city as we do we tend to spend most of our time at a desk or behind the steering wheel when we are out. Jane’s Walks are meant to get people walking and to get people talking. Lucky for us there are numerous walks planned throughout Toronto and here in Etobicoke as well.

Jane’s Walks are organized walking tours where the goal is to get us outdoors and to explore and talk about our fantastic neighbourhoods. They are named after the late great urbanist and activist Jane Jacobs who wrote about community and it’s role in city building. She was “a firm believer in the importance of local residents having input on how their neighbourhoods develop. Jacobs encouraged people to familiarize themselves with the places where they live, work and play”. She passed away in 2006 but the Jane’s Walk initiative lives on.

Each Jane’s Walk is created and organized by local residents who know “a little something” about their neighbourhood and what makes it special. This global movement grows in size and the number of walks each year and 2018 is no different. Jane’s Walks are fun, educational, and gives each of us to interact with our neighbours which is something we strongly believe in. The walks are free and should you be interested in leading your own walk check out the Jane’s Walk website below.

Some of the walks taking place in Etobicoke are:
Along Mimico Creek
Village of Islington ArtWalk – Time Travel? Walk back to the 1900s & experience early settler life!
Evolution of Long Branch Park (Starting 1884)
Untangling Spaghetti Junction: the last walk through the interchange
Long Branch: A Jane’s Walk Bike tour
… and many more walks across Toronto.

So with the weather warming up there is no better time to get out into your neighbourhood and find out more about where you live by participating in a Jane’s Walk.
