Toronto Polar Bear Dip

You see it on the news every year on January 1st. A large group of people taking a dip and running into the freezing waters of Lake Ontario with, get this, smiles on their faces. It’s all part of the Toronto Polar Bear Dip and there’s a reason behind this madness.

The Toronto Polar Bear Dip takes place at Lake Shore’s Sunnyside Pavilion just East of Humber Bay Shores, an area shared by the City of Toronto and Etobicoke. Every year on January 1st the Toronto Polar Bear Club comes together to raise funds for Toronto charities. Since 2005, the Polar Bear Dip has raised over $400,000. The minimum donation for participation is $30 which is a small price to pay considering what a great story you’ll have to tell your friends and family. The best part is you’ll raise money for Boost Child & Youth Advocacy Centre (Boost CYAC).

So what do you wear for the Toronto Polar Bear Dip? Anything and everything! You’ll see people in speedos, bikinis, one-pieces, costumes, Maple Leaf jerseys, and so on. The important thing to remember is to bring warm clothing before you get into the water and afterwards. Some people stay in the water for mere seconds while others frolic for several minutes. Registration and pre-dip events start at 10:30am with the actual polar bear dip occurring at 12pm sharp!

So if you have the courage and want to support a great cause the Toronto Polar Bear Dip is meant for you. It’s a great time and everyone has a smile from ear to ear. Well, almost everyone. It’s freezing after all!
