April 1, 2017 –
NEXT TEN is a participatory exhibition that invites residents to re-imagine the future of the neighbourhood through a series of creative, artist-led projects. For the month of April the Smith Zone Gallery will be transformed by the community as they execute and display a curated selection of future-oriented projects.
The exhibition marks Lakeshore Arts’ 10th year making art and building community in our Mimico storefront gallery and is presented in collaboration with Toronto-based visual artist Emily DiCarlo. Drawing on her creative practice of exploring issues of time, the power of the gesture and an intensifying need for communal interaction, DiCarlo will lead the community creating artworks that both imagine and set a foundation for our collective future.
Tools and instructions for participation will be provided to visitors and their completed projects will be integrated into the collaborative exhibition. At the conclusion of the month, the work that was created will find new homes in the community and documentation will be kept as a digital archive.
NEXT TEN will launch with a community celebration on April 1st when DiCarlo will be on site to introduce and guide visitors in the project-making process.
Community participation is essential so we encourage you to drop in anytime during gallery hours to help build these projects! Everyone welcome.
