The magic of flowers and plants to lift moods should not be underestimated whether you’re in the dead of Winter or the warmth of Summer. Experiencing the various colours and scents brings smiles to young and old alike. “Flower Power” is what my daughter calls it and you can get your own dose at the Centennial Park Conservatory in Etobicoke.
Centennial Park Conservatory is located at 151 Elm Crest Road in the West end of the great Centennial Park. Open 365 days a year and free admission with wheel chair access there’s few places I know that offer a more accessible place to stroll and enjoy nature’s beauty year round. The conservatory is one of Toronto’s largest at 12,000 square feet and is made up of three distinct sections: a tropical greenhouse, an arid greenhouse, and a show house. While the tropical and arid greenhouses contain permanent collections of plants from around the world the show house boasts “colourful flowers reflecting the seasons throughout the year”.
There are five seasonal flower shows at the Centennial Park Conservatory which consist of Spring, Easter, Summer, Fall and Christmas. The Christmas Flower Show is one of our favourites as it features horse and carriage rides, Victorian carolers, and hot apple cider. Families are also encouraged to sing carols and enjoy chestnuts on an open fire. The Christmas Flower Show runs from early December to mid-January and is considered the highlight of the year. The Spring Show takes place in February, the Easter Show runs for 3-4 weeks beginning Palm Sunday and ending after Easter, the Summer Show runs from June-September, and the Fall Show runs from Early October to mid November.
You can probably rush through the Centennial Park Conservatory but that’s not the way to experience “flower power” in Etobicoke. Stroll through the various greenhouses and you’ll appreciate what nature has to offer and notice something new you haven’t seen on a previous visit.
