Things are different now from when I was a kid. Look around and you’ll see children more interested in iPads than splashpads. Fortunately there are those who dedicate their lives to making sure that kids stay active physically and positively. One such person is Jay Mandarino and his facility, CJ Skateboard Park and School in Etobicoke.
CJ Skateboard Park and School is located at 60 Horner Avenue, just South of Evans Avenue. The 25,000 square foot facility is one of the largest in the world and is run on the backs of hard-working staff and volunteers. The non-for-profit skateboard facility caters to young kids of every background, including at-risk youth and special needs. Although it seems seamless when looking at all the smiling faces with their skateboards the running of the park and school is a major undertaking and one that Jay and his team do amazingly well.
CJ Skateboard Park and School runs a variety of programs including summer camps, parties, beginner programs, and programs for the more advanced. Another great offering is PA Days where parents can drop off the kids for a nominal fee and the kids participate in lessons along with meals. Some of the programs are free while some are subsidized by others. The great thing about skateboarding is the cost of equipment is relatively inexpensive as compare to other sports and activities.
If you’re looking to build self-esteem in your child and want to keep them active in a positive and largely non-competitive environment then give CJ Skateboard Park and School a call. And besides, skateboarding is cool!
