Today’s seniors are more active than ever. They are healthier, more involved in the community, and generally happier than generations past. As most seniors are retired or near-retirement they undoubtedly need a place where they can focus their energy into something productive and that’s where the Islington Seniors Centre in Etobicoke shines.
The Islington Seniors Centre is located at 4968 Dundas Street West which is a couple of blocks West of Islington. It’s mission is to “provide programs and services to promote the physical, emotional and social wellness of adults 55+ living in the community”. The centre is a “warm and friendly place for seniors to gather with others to socialize and take part in recreational programs and supportive services”. Recognized in Ontario as an Elderly Persons’ Centre and registered as a not-for-profit organization the Islington Seniors Centre is able to provide a wide variety of services for a very low yearly membership fee of $20, which includes participation in groups, all-year-round activities, access to the Garden Cafe and bi-monthly foot clinic, and discounts on bus trips.
If you visit the Islington Seniors Centre excellent website you can see the variety of programs that they offer. From educational programs such as computer use including laptops, cell phones, and iPads. Fitness programs such as Nordic Pole Walking, Table Tennis, and Line Dancing. Crafts such as Painting, Knitting, and Sewing. And of course social ranging from Bridge and Euchre games, Snooker, and Dinner with Conversation. There are so many great programs and events offered at the centre that it would be impossible to list them all here.
Being a not-for-profit and registered charity the centre could not exist without charitable donations, bequests of legacy, and volunteers. If you think you can help the centre please do so as we need to take care of our seniors as they have taken care of us.
