It’s official. Excalibur Comics on Bloor has closed its doors for good.  It’s sad to see an Etobicoke landmark close so for the time being this entry remains on 365Etobicoke.com as a Hall of Fame member.   Good luck Rob!

Any serious comic fan knows that it’s not so much the flashy covers that sell comic books it’s what’s inside.  That’s kind of what we think about Excalibur Comics as well.  Driving by the tiny store front right next to the classic Kingsway Theatre it’s almost too easy too miss.  Owner Robert Chin has been there since the store’s opening in 1987 when the comic industry was at its zenith.  That’s 23 years and he’ll probably be there for 23 more.

Excalibur Comics is small.  I mean it’s SMALL.  It definitely isn’t Silver Snail but it’s not without its charm.  There’s still plenty of comics to pick up and leaf through and Rob will take care of your monthly lists.  The store recently added a second floor but you’ll find most people jammed into the tiny ground floor chatting up Rob on any given day.  I really do love this place and it reminds me of when I was a kid running to the store to pick up the latest issue.

Did I mention the place was small?

Excalibur Comics is a throwback to where geeks used to congregate and proves that size doesn’t matter.  Best. Etobicoke. Comic book store. Ever.

Rob Chin announced last Wednesday that after so many years in business he is closing the store Excalibur Comics permanently on 30th October 2010. He blames it on higher rents, increasing costs of operation, and a shrinking market.
Until then everything is on sale at 25% off and he is still operating as business as usual. So drop in and say hi to Rob, pick up a bargain, and say goodbye to the store.

Seriously? Darn. I love that place and I know many people will miss it.

Oh, so the store is closing down for good? Whats going to happen to Rob (the owner)? Is he going to sell comics somewhere else, is someone else going to take over the business? Where will i buy my comics now? :(
