The more you take a look around the GTA the more we see greenspace taken up by new townhomes, shopping centres, or condo developments. That is why places like the Humber Arboretum in Etobicoke are so important in the grand scheme of things.
The Humber Arboretum, located at Humber College’s North Campus at Highway 27 just South of Finch Avenue, comprises over a 100 hectares of land situated along the Humber River. It is “dedicated to showcasing an extensive collection of woody and herbaceous plants, and protecting and restoring habitat for native plants and animals”. It is important to note that the Humber Arboretum is much more than just “a park”. It is one of those places that provides a rewarding experience for everyone while at the same time educating students in doing important work.
The Humber Arboretum offers many programs aimed at kids and their families. With weekly events that are either free or costing a few dollars, there is always something great going on. It is also home to Winter, Summer, and March Break camps aimed at children 5 to 13 years of age. Orienteering, snowshoeing, tobogganing, forest exploring, arts and crafts, and so much more. The best part? No video games!
For the rest of us the Humber Arboretum and the Centre of Urban Ecology provides many other events throughout the year from walking tours to maple syrup harvesting. The grounds also offer so many spectacular plants and flowers that photographers would love to “shoot”. Speaking of which, permits are also available for wedding photography. And of course there are various programs for college students in a variety of fields making it very tempting to enrol! With our busy schedules it is also a great place to just wander around and listen to the sights and sounds of nature. The Humber Arboretum is also a regular participant of Doors Open Toronto.
When an organization is able to combine the love of the environment and the outdoors with learning, all the while making it fun, it’s a great thing. Thank goodness for the Humber Arboretum in Etobicoke!

My favourite place by far! Beautiful year round but most gorgeous in the fall.
Hi Vanessa,
We have never been in the fall but yes, we can imagine how beautiful it would be.
