The first thing you’ll notice walking into SanRemo Bakery in Etobicoke, besides the delicious smelling fresh-baked bread and hot table, is the organized chaos taking place within. You’ll see little old ladies walking around with long loaves of Italian bread, young people digging into their creations from the hot table, and families trying to decide on what gelato ice cream to try. If I could I’d turn off the sound and set the whole scene to some beautiful music by Bocelli.

SanRemo Bakery and Cafe, located at 374 Royal York Road just south of Evans, is one of those neighbourhood establishments that has been around longer than most of their neighbours. Serving the Mimico community since 1969, SanRemo has customers not only from South Etobicoke but from Toronto and Mississauga as well. It is almost always packed with satisfied patrons running from the breads, to the cheese section, to the grocery goods, and so on. One thing you’ll notice immediately is that the friendly staff is always within arms reach.

San Remo Bakery really does have it all if you’re planning a European inspired meal. The freshly baked breads come in many forms but be sure to try one of their Vienna breads, loaves that are stuffed with peppers, olives, and onions. Their grocery aisles contain many imported items from Italy such as vinegars, oils, and other anitpasto items. If you’re having a party SanRemo Bakery also has a very tasty catering menu as well as being able to produce a wonderful custom cake.

You can’t talk about SanRemo Bakery without mentioning the hot table. The most difficult thing to do while people are patiently, or impatiently, waiting behind you is to decide what to eat. Choose a delicious pasta like lasagna, gnocchi, canneloni, or ravioli. Or how about a large veal or chicken sandwich made to order with mushrooms, grille onions, and hot peppers. You can also go for pizza better than any fast food joint can make. By the slice, personal size, or party size. Deli sandwiches, sausages, salads, and so on. Eat inside, on the fabulous patio, or as take-out, you’ll find everything reasonably price and coming back weekly, or daily, for more. Don’t forget an espresso!

Many people feel that SanRemo Bakery and Cafe is not only the best bakery shop in Etobicoke but in all of Toronto as well. one of the greatest compliments I can give is that I always feel better walking out of SanRemo than I did walking in.
