It’s a known fact that many people refer to Etobicoke as “Little Ukraine”. While that is somewhat exaggerated there indeed is a healthy and vibrant Ukrainian population in many parts of Etobicoke. So where better to celebrate Ukraine Independence Day in Toronto than at Etobicoke’s own Centennial Park.
Ukraine Indeendence Day, formally known as Flavours of Ukraine, is an annual celebration commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence and it takes place Saturday August 19th from 10am to 11pm at Centennial Park (entrance off of Renforth between Rathburn and Eglinton). There will be plenty to do at this celebrated event. Live entertainment with a variety of concerts at the main stage along with traditional dance. There’ll also be vendors selling their wares and crafts. Bring your “A” game if you plan on participating in the chess tournament. There will also be lots to do for kids and teens. Adults can enjoy the beer garden. And of course there will be lots of food to sample and enjoy. Perogies and cabbage rolls anyone?
The event is organized by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress which “represents the Ukrainian Canadian community before the people and Government of Canada, promotes linkages with Ukraine, and identifies and addresses the needs of the Ukrainian community in Canada to ensure its continued development within Canada’s socio-cultural fabric.”
All of my Ukrainian friends will be there so why not join them and enjoy some great food and great fun at the Ukraine Independence Day festival in Etobicoke’s Centennial Park.
