There are very few restaurants that can boast about being around for more than 50 years. One such business is the family run Kingsway Fish and Chips in Etobicoke.
Kingsway Fish and Chips is located at 3060 Bloor Street West, just West of Royal York, and boy is it good. Gordon and Rachel run the family owned business but it really doesn’t feel like a restaurant. Sure there are menus and people taking your order, but with a warm decor and smiling faces all around it feels like a visit to a close aunt. That is, if your aunt cooked an amazing and world-renowned plate of fish and chips!
Kingsway Fish and Chips’ menu caters to many tastes especially if you love fish. There are many halibut combinations to choose from and really, it depends on how hungry you are. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative the grilled rainbow trout, shrimp, or salmon fillet dishes are good options. They also have traditional delicacies such as Scottish meat pies or haggis for the adventurous. For us, it’s all about the melt-in-your-mouth fish and chips with a side of coleslaw. Oh, and kids eat free on Tuesdays with the purchase of an adult dish.
Quick story. As we were standing in line for takeout one night an older gentlemen approached the counter and Rachel greeted him by name. They exchanged pleasantries, he picked up his order that was ready about 30 seconds before he arrived, said goodbye and left. The transaction was so seamless and so friendly that it was like he was picking up something at a pal’s house.
Once you try one of their fabulous meals you’ll understand why a visit here is a weekly tradition for many patrons and their families. Even as I write this my mouth is watering for some good old Kingsway Fish and Chips!
