Admittedly, I get all warm and fuzzy when I become aware of organizations that help expand our creative minds through the arts. Locally, we have Arts Etobicoke which is considered one of Canada’s finest community art councils.
Arts Etobicoke, whose gallery is located at 4893A Dundas Street West, began their work in 1973 with the main goal to “inspire, engage and encourage people of all ages and diverse backgrounds to ‘ignite their creative spirit'”. They do this not only through their own arts programs (student art shows at Sherway Gardens, free weekly art classes, gallery exhibits, etc) but also in partnership with other organizations in Etobicoke such as Lakeshore Arts, TDSB, and The Milkweed Collective to name a few.
As mentioned, the Saturday Storefront Art Classes are great for all ages and touch on a number of disciplines such as “puppet workshops for kids, photography workshops for youth ages 13-22, digital video workshops for adults and much more”. Each class is free and is taught by professional artists and teachers each Saturday afternoon. Visit the Arts Etobicoke website (see below) for more information.
The Storefront Gallery plays host to many exhibits that range from interactive art installations to photography to community projects and, depending on the exhibit, will appeal to a variety of age groups and tastes.
There is so much that Arts Etobicoke offers that it’s impossible to cover it all here. I encourage those that are even a little bit interested in art or have children that are waiting to break out of their creative shell to visit the Arts Etobicoke website and pay them a visit.
