Horse racing is known as the “Sport of Kings”. It’s only fitting then that the appropriately named Queen’s Plate, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world, takes place right here in Etobicoke.
The 159th running of the Queen’s Plate takes place Saturday June 30th 2018 at Woodbine Racetrack (555 Rexdale Boulevard at Rexdale and Hwy 27). The first running took place way back in 1860 and it’s still going strong today. Canada’s Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing is made up of The Queen’s Plate, The Prince of Wales and The Breeders’ Stakes and was inaugurated in 1959. Over all these years only seven horses have been able to win all three races. The prizes have also skyrocketed over the years with the winners of the 158th running of the Queen’s Plate sharing a purse of one million dollars! The Queen’s Plate is run on a 1 1/4 mile track by three-year-old horses foaled in Canada.
New this year is the Queen’s Plate Festival that begins Friday June 29th and includes so many great concerts and culinary events in addition to the racing. This year’s Queen’s Plate will be bigger than ever!
Horse racing has transformed drastically since the early days. Woodbine Racetrack has so many entertainment options that you really can bring the entire family there. The kids will cheer with excitement as the horses race down the track. You on the other hand might not be as happy if your horse didn’t win. Regardless, it’s going to be a fun-filled afternoon and the excitement in the stands will reach a fever pitch. Ticket sales begin April 16th through Ticketmaster.

The Queen’s Plate is truly one of the biggest horse races in Canada and the US. With the entire world watching you may want to grab a seat at the actual event. Afterall, it’s being held nearby at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke.
