A long, long time ago Sherway Cinemas was considered one of the premier places to watch the latest movie.  In the early days (1980s and 90s) most theatres were jammed into the corner of a mall and had tiny screens.  Our Sherway Cinemas were different in that it was a dedicated theatre and had some of the largest screens in the city.   When we lost our theatre at Sherway across from the mall, most Etobicans had an empty feeling inside.  But enough about the past, Sherway Cinemas had become Cineplex Queensway and we haven’t looked back since.

Located at Queensway and Islington, Cineplex Odeon Queensway is the envy of all other cinema complexes.  This theatre has 18 screens, all with stadium style seating.  Unlike the majority of the new style theatres, Cineplex Queensway actually has seats that lean back for added comfort.  They’re also one of the few that offer the new D Box motion seats.  If you want a truly unique movie-viewing experience watch the latest action movie in these seats.  You will literally feel every explosion and every crash in the base of your spine.  Cineplex Queensway is also the first theatre to offer an UltraAVX screen.  Viewing a movie in this theatre will set you back a few bucks more but the price is well worth it.  You will be viewing the movie on a huge digital screen with improved sound.  All from your extra wide seat with more legroom.  The seats are also reserved so there’s no need to line up for the latest blockbuster.

Hungry?  Cineplex Queensway has you covered. You can go for popcorn and nachos or grab some Yogen Fruz, a Tim Hortons coffee, or Pizza Pizza.  If you’re of drinking age you can also stop by Alan Smithee’s bar before or after the movie for a drink and catch the game on one of four flat screens.  As you would expect, weekends are pretty jammed with the younger set hanging out (I’m not sure if any are actually watching movies).  If you’re really hungry you can always grab dinner at one of the fine restaurants just in front of the theatre (Milestone’s, Kelsey’s, Montana’s) and make a night out of it.  Some of the restaurants run “Dinner and a Movie” deals that makes it easier on the wallet.  It is truly a great night out if you enjoy movies as much as I do.

Sherway Cinemas has risen from the ashes like a phoenix and its new name is Cineplex Odeon Queensway.

dude… seriously? You cant mention the Queensway theatre before the Kingsway Theatre!!!

The Q is all that is wrong with subburbn living – a faceless, soul-less monstrosity symbolic of subburban sprawl.

Get into the old villages of Etobicoke – check out Kingsway theatre…. kick it old school, romance the significant other… be different and support the local economy.

      Hey gucc!

The Kingsway Theatre will definitely be getting a mention one of these days.

While I agree that the classic cinemas of old were great places to watch movies in, the new demands of the viewing public require the large multiplexes with 3D screens and stadium style seating. At least Queensway is one of the better ones out there and is suitable located right off the QEW.

But without a doubt everyone should go out and support the little guy.
