1800 DegreesWhen it comes down to it there really are only about a dozen restaurants in Toronto that I would classify as genuine steakhouses. 1800 Degrees in Etobicoke is without a doubt one of the steakhouses at the top of that list.

1800 Degrees, located at 3058 Bloor Street West, gets its name from the signature broiler that “literally cooks steak at a temperature of 1800 Degrees Fahrenheit”. Have dinner here one night here and you’ll know why this steakhouse is the winner of numerous “Best Steak” and “Best Seafood” awards from Dine.TO, Bloor West Villager, and the Etobicoke Guardian. Serving hormone and antibiotic free Canadian prime steaks along with fresh, sustainably caught seafood, the dishes at 1800 Degrees aren’t only environmentally sound, they are sinfully delicious.

Whether you are in the mood for Seafood or steak, 1800 Degrees has you covered. For starters, the lobster & clam chowder and smoked blue cheese wedge salad will delight you. If you’re leaning towards seafood for a main the striped sea bass and lobster risotto come highly recommended. However, if you want a steak from the 1800 degree broiler you can’t go wrong with the Black Angus prime New York strip or the prime filet mignon. All prime steaks are top 1% grade and aged 35 to 40 days. My mouth is watering just typing this out.

Unlike most other steakhouses, 1800 Degrees’ interior is very modern and classic. With booth seating as well as table seating, the warmly lit space is perfect for business lunches, group outings, or that special night out with a loving partner. Servers are attentive and the in-house sommelier is always there to help you pair your meal with the perfect wine. It’s also perfectly situated for drivers (plenty of parking available) and transit users (steps from Royal York station).

The Kingsway and Bloor West Village is well-known for its superior selection of fantastic restaurants. The family run 1800 Degrees steakhouse fits in superbly with that crowd.

Woodbine RacetrackWarning: Don’t glance over this entry. When someone mentions “going to the racetrack” visions of chain-smoking gamblers tearing up losing tickets may enter your mind. What actually goes on at Woodbine Racetrack is something much more fun and exhilarating.

Woodbine Racetrack is located at 555 Rexdale Boulevard (South-West corner of Rexdale and Hwy 27) in Etobicoke and is steeped in tradition. For one it is the yearly host of the Queen’s Plate, part of Canada’s Triple Crown of horse racing. It is also the site of Secretariat’s very last race, arguably the greatest horse to have ever raced. It’s hard to believe that such a historic event would have taken place in our little city.

Woodbine Racetrack has gone over so many improvements over the years that it’s hard to list them all. From numerous restaurants to the track itself, you’ll have no problem spending an afternoon or a night here. Woodbine is also the perfect venue for company functions. With numerous meeting rooms and dining rooms, your company’s staff will be treated like royalty with betting vouchers as well as a “betting team” that will teach you how to bet the various combinations available. They also added slot machines for those that want to forgo the excitement of watching horses thunder down the track. I went for the first time on a date several years ago (the minimum bet is still $2) and had a blast. Sure, I didn’t really know what I was doing and I wasn’t playing with a lot of money but by the end of the night I was actually ahead! By the way, did I mention that there is free parking and no entrance fee?

So if you’re looking for something different to do take your boyfriend or girlfriend, wife or husband, or bring the kids to watch these magnificent beasts race down the track on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Going to the track isn’t what it used to be, especially at Woodbine Racetrack.

BikeMost of us start thinking about taking the bike out of the garage once the snow melts and the sun begins to stay out longer. In some cases the bike needs a little “TLC” to get it ready for the new season and that first spin around the block. Or maybe you’ll just treat yourself to a new bike. In either case Cycle Butik in Etobicoke has you covered.

Cycle Butik is located at 2749 Lake Shore Boulevard West and is every bicycle lovers dream. Having moved to an expanded space recently there is more stock than ever. Road bikes, mountain bikes, commuter bikes, European city bikes, and BMX bikes (that’s a lot of bikes), you’ll find it all here. Cycle Butik is a one-stop shop as you can pick up all your gear including clothing, accessories, and safety gear. Before buying a bike you’ll want to make sure it’s a good match for you physically. You might be able to find a good bike at a big box store but you’ll want the service and experience of people for whom bicycling is all they do. It’s no surprise that Cycle Butik is an Etobicoke Guardian reader’s choice winner and one of the best bike shops in Toronto.

Just like a car needing an oil change your bike will benefit from little proactive maintenance before each riding season. I recall riding my bike last year near James Gardens Park when my bicycle chain snapped. I ended up having to walk my bike back to my house about eight kilometres away. A simple bike tune-up would have fixed the issue long before the breakdown. Lesson learned. Cycle Butik offers a few bicycle tune-up options so you’ll be able to choose the one that suits your needs.

If you’re looking at buying a new bike or just want to tune up your current ride, call the experts at Cycle Butik. They’ll have you out there and pedalling in no time.

VegetablesWay back in the day, before grocery stores and shopping malls, people would grow their own fruits and vegetables. Anything they didn’t grow themselves they would trade for or buy at the local farmers market. The Sherway Gardens Farmers Market is like taking a step back in time, sort of, to the good old days.

The Sherway Gardens Farmers Market takes place every Friday, 8:00am to 2:00pm, in the North Parking Lot of Sherway Gardens. From early May to the end of October you can enjoy open-air shopping and the smell and colours of organically grown merchandise. You won’t have the convenience of shopping carts and air conditioning but really, I’d much rather take along my own cart (if needed) anyway. The thing I enjoy most is speaking directly with the merchants to find out where their produce come from. You’ll notice right away that all vendors and many shoppers are regulars.

It’s not all fruits and vegetables at the Sherway Gardens Farmers Market. You’ll also find cheese, nuts, meats, eggs, sauces, baked goods, mushrooms, honey, flowers, and prepared foods. The Sherway Gardens Farmers Market website is one of the best there is with a listing of all vendors.

So if you notice your fridge lacking some of the items in the four major food groups you’ll want to take a trip down to the Sherway Gardens Farmers Market to stock up.
